Fire Hall No. 3

Location:

160 Bruce Street, London, ON

There is an odd-looking roof that I see every day from my deck and home is a fitting place to start my exploration. The repurposed fire station was originally built in 1891 and at that time firefighters used horses and wagons (Eqbal, 2021). Initially I was overwhelmed by the columns and thought there was nothing left of the original fire hall (Figure 1). Upon further exploration and comparison, I could see that although urbanized, many features of the past were still present.

The distinct arching brickwork over the ground floor doorway and window are still in place. Additionally, the six windows on the second floor and style of the roof have remained the same (Figure 2). There is a particular haunting feeling of the picture I took as I feel every time I look, I hear more of the past – as if to say stop being focused on the façade. The view from my deck can be seen below in Figure 17.
